I get frustrated when I can't get Root Access in Nautilus. So I decide to create a shortcut.

Virtual Box and Ubuntu 12.04

So today I;ve been using Virtual Box and Ubuntu to be honest the best experiences I've had with Linux is virtually. Everytime I've used it directly on hardware it has been a disaster and wasted time.

However I found 2 things to day that made my Linux experience more pleasurable. So I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and trying to keep to it to really get to know the quirks and features. Resisting upgrading for now until the next LTS.

Here are the 2:

Install the 'guest additions' this lets you use Ubuntu in fullscreen.

and I found how to use Ubuntu Unity 3D. You need to enable '3D acceleration' in virtualbox settings for the virtual machine.

HP Notebook Laptop - Mouse and Keyboard Freeze - Ubuntu 13.04

I solve the problem with my HP DM1 by disabling 'fan always on'  and 'Function key' in the BIOS.

And adding 'thermal.off=1' to grub config.

To edit grub

Use the terminal and type sudo gedit /edit/default/grub

Edit the text to look like this.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash thermal.off=1"
 All seems to well now.

Seems like Chrome triggers it to freeze also

Customising GIMP to look like Photoshop

I've played with GIMP before but only this week I have really taken the time to use it instead of Photoshop.

I'm really enjoying the fact you can customise the interface, it has made using Gimp easier.

Blogpost of what I've done so far

It's also given me a new view on those tutorials where you make Ubuntu look like OSX. In the past I never saw the point but if you like OSX and find Open Source cool. Changing the interface makes you feel at home. Having things where you would expect to find them is a time saver.

GIMP vs Photoshop, Van vs Lorry

The debate - is Gimp as good as Photoshop. The way I look at it Gimp is a van where Photoshop is a lorry.

In most cases a van will do the job if you're moving house or making a delivery for your business it does the job. No better or worst than a lorry. But in a situation where you need a lorry for example a 20 pallet delivery of  stock to a large supermarket a van is simply not suitable.

A van could do it but it wasn't design to make those kind of deliveries.

Gimp can do much of what Photoshop can do but not everything much like a van and a lorry.
For the foreseeable future I just need a van especially when that van is free to use.

Libre Office Interface

Here's how my Libre Office Writer interface looks.

GIMP LOOK LIKE PHOTOSHOP Part 1

This is GIMP that I customised to look like Photoshop.
GIMP for OSX Download

First thing you want to do is go to the 'Window' menu and click 'Single-Window Mode'.

Here's the theme that I used Download

I merged the 'Pro' theme and the 'Small' theme.
The 'Pro' theme gave it the dark look. The 'Small' theme to make the icons smaller.

Installing the Theme
To install the theme on OSX unzip and copy the folder to:

Right click the GIMP.app > 'Show Package Contents'
Contents > Resources > Share > gimp > 2.0 > themes

Edit the Toolbox
Edit the toolbox to show and hide Tools in preferences.
